Energy conservation has become the main focus throughout the nation and the world.  In an effort to become more energy efficient in our own homes, here are some suggestions.

1.  Shut off the lights when leaving a room.  Instead, use aromatherapy candles which are not only soothing, but esthetically pleasing as well.

2.  Replace light bulbs with halogen bulbs.  Although a bit pricey, they can last several years without having to be changed.

3.  Ensure that all light fixtures are properly cleaned regularly.  This can increase overall efficiency by up to 20%.

4.  It is suggested that whatever type of light bulb is recommended for a particular fixture, to follow that recommendation.  For example, using a 60 watt bulb when it calls for a 40 watt bulb can waste energy.

5.  Unplug appliances when not in use and buy appliances that have the Energy Star label.

6.  During the summer months, use the AC as little as possible.  Set the AC on Power Saver to conserve energy, and clean the air filter regularly.

7.  Utilize low profile fans.  They are affordable and run on DC power.

8.  Set the refrigerator temperature below the recommended level.  37 degrees is suggested since a refrigerator uses more energy than any other appliance.

9.  Try not to overload your outlets.  Unplug hair dryers, cell phone chargers, and other items after use.

10.  Instead of a regular desk lamp, purchase a halogen lamp as your main source of light in your den or work area.

11.  Shut living room lights when watching TV, as well as kitchen lights in the evening hours.

12.  When using your washer, use the cold cycle.

13.  For the dishwasher, only utilize it when it is at full capacity.

14.  Before the cold weather arrives, winterize your home by ensuring insulation is up to standards as well as caulking the windows.

15.  During the winter months, it is advised to keep the thermostat at 68 degrees during the day and 55 at night.

16.  Purchase a gadget from a home store that can be attached to the shower head to decrease the flow of water.

17.  Almost every state has a recycle program.  Ensure that you have enough garbage cans to separate papers, plastic, and bottles from regular garbage.

18.  If you have an energy-efficient microwave oven, experts assert that it uses up to 80% less electricity than a conventional oven.

19.  When using a regular oven, try not to open the oven to check on the food too often, as the heat will escape and thus more energy will be required to complete the cooking process.  Prepare foods that can all be cooked at the same temperature.

20.  You can save up to 10% on heating costs if you insulate the water heater.
